(TheRedWire.com) – The US Senate is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Initially, the razor-thin Democratic majority offered the left-wing of the party hope it would pass its highly controversial legislation. It doesn’t seem to be working out that way. While no one is surprised at the united opposition from the Republican Party to President Biden’s infrastructure proposal, some are surprised at opposition within the Democratic Party. It wasn’t supposed to be this difficult. Yet, here they are, struggling to agree on much of anything to the delight of Conservatives.

So, what’s causing so much turmoil among Democrats? First, they only have 50 votes. Losing one member kills a bill instantly. On Friday, June 11, a bipartisan group of 10 Senators agreed on a proposal that stripped climate change, social programs, and increased taxes from the infrastructure bill. The Left is now threatening to block the bipartisan proposal unless lawmakers meet their demands to spend trillions of dollars on controversial issues.
Compounding matters, Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) says he doesn’t think he can support the massive spending. In addition, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) refuses to cave on his position that the filibuster will not be eliminated or changed in any way. That ensures the GOP can stop any bill from passing without 60 votes, a certain death knell for the infrastructure proposal.
The path to success is narrow, but it seems like an 8-lane paved highway to failure for Joe Biden’s infrastructure proposal. Some Hill staffers say this is the last and biggest opportunity for Democrats. If they fail, the Left’s entire agenda is likely to fail with the 2022 midterm elections looming large come January.
