(TheRedWire.com) – Last week, a U.S. Marshal on duty outside the residence of Justice Sonia Sotomayor had ended up shooting an attempted carjacker.
According to the police and court records the 18-year-old suspect had pulled up next to the parked vehicle of the deputy in an unmarked car. The incident occurred on July 5, right after 1 a.m. in Washington, D.C.
The suspect had then attempted to carjack the vehicle by approaching the driver-side door with a gun in their arm. However, that led to one of the marshals firing around four shots that struck the suspect in the mouth. The suspect was taken for treatment at the hospital and has been arrested.
The U.S. Marshals Service has not provided any clarification on whether the marshals were protecting the justice, however, the location they were stationed in matches her Northwest Washington residence location.
In a statement, U.S. Marshals Service spokesperson Abigail Meyer argued that the Deputy U.S. Marshals who had been involved in the shooting had been part of the unit that protected the Supreme Court justice’s residences.
On Friday the police issued a press release in which the incident was described as a “U.S. Marshals involved shooting,” however a later report by the Daily Mail first connected the team to the protective detail of the Justice.
The suspect has been identified as Kentrell Flowers, and the vehicle being used, a Toyota Sienna Minivan, had also been carjacked.
This year there have been over 75 carjacking arrests by the Metropolitan Police Department, according to the data shown.
