(TheRedWire.com) – On Thursday, a Manhattan jury found former President Donald Trump of being guilty of 34 felony charges. This could potentially result in further challenges if he ends up imprisoned as the Secret Service would need to protect him. However, a top Democrat is seeking to take away the protection from the former President.
House Homeland Security Committee ranking Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., introduced the Security Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act, which would block Trump from receiving further protection. In his statement, he argued that currently, the law did not have any provisions relating to the Secret Service potentially needing to protect the former President during his prison sentence. He added that while it is regrettable that these are the circumstances they now have to deal with, this is a circumstance that they need to consider.
Trump had been found to be guilty on all counts in the New York v. Trump case which relates to a hush money payment made on his behalf to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Trump has continued to claim that he is innocent and he has previously denied the claims of an affair with Daniels.
Despite this, his recent conviction means that at the time of his sentencing, he could end up behind bars. This is a development that would result in several questions, one of which is how the Secret Service would continue to grant protection to him.
