Will Californians Say Goodbye to Newsom, Hello to a Republican Governor?

(TheRedWire.com) – Since March 2020, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) instituted some of the harshest shutdowns to combat COVID-19 in America. As a result, Newsom’s approval rating dove south, and the state GOP is circulating a recall petition to oust the first-term governor. As of Friday, February 5, Republicans had secured 1.4 million of the 1.5 million signatures needed to put the recall election on the ballot this May. They have until March 15 to secure the remaining 100,000 signatures.

As the signatures grow closer, two Republicans and one independent say they are ready to jump in and fight for the opportunity to serve as California’s next governor. They say the recall isn’t political. Instead, it’s about a lack of leadership. Newsom’s problems started last fall when he was caught violating his own policy by dining out without a mask. Since then, harsh shutdowns of businesses and stay-at-home orders have left citizens frustrated and scared for their financial futures.

According to a Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies survey, 46% of registered voters approve of Newsom’s job performance. That’s down from 64% in September.
