FBI Storms City Hall Inner Circle

A widening corruption probe is shaking New York City again, and the latest raids put Eric Adams’s inner circle back in the spotlight.

Quick Take

  • Federal investigators searched the homes of top Adams aides, including First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor Philip Banks III.[2][3]
  • No charges had been filed against Wright or Banks at the time of the raids, and officials said the reasons were still unclear.[3][4]
  • Adams was already facing a federal bribery and campaign finance case tied to alleged foreign influence and campaign benefits.[5][18]
  • The probe has also touched police officials, seized phones, and now a new corruption case involving former aide Frank Carone.[1][8]

Raids Hit Adams Aides as Probe Deepens

Federal agents searched the homes of Sheena Wright in Manhattan and Philip Banks III in Queens as part of a long-running corruption probe.[2][3] Reports said agents also seized devices from the homes of other officials, including the police commissioner, and subpoenaed phones from several New York Police Department personnel.[3][4] At the time, no charges had been filed against Wright or Banks, and sources said the reasons for the searches were still unclear.[3][4]

The raids matter because they show how far the inquiry has spread inside City Hall and the police department. The investigation has already reached some of Adams’s closest allies, and it sits on top of an earlier federal case against the mayor himself.[1][5] That earlier indictment charged Adams with bribery, conspiracy, wire fraud, and soliciting foreign campaign contributions, with prosecutors saying he accepted valuable travel perks and other benefits.[5][18]

Adams’ Legal Trouble Keeps Expanding

The Justice Department said Adams abused his power to seek illegal campaign money and personal benefits from foreign nationals and others.[5] Prosecutors also said he pressured city officials to help a foreign government’s Manhattan building pass fire inspection issues tied to the opening of a consulate.[5] Adams has denied wrongdoing, pleaded not guilty, and later moved to dismiss the bribery charge.[11][15]

That defense has not stopped the cloud from growing. Mohamed Bahi, a former Adams aide, was arrested in October 2024 and charged with witness tampering and destruction of evidence tied to the federal case.[1][3] More recently, Frank Carone, a former chief of staff, and his brother Anthony were arrested in a separate federal case that accused them of bribery, money laundering, and obstruction of justice in a migrant shelter contract scheme.[8][13]

Why the Political Damage Is So Severe

For conservatives, the bigger issue is not just one mayor’s bad luck. It is the familiar picture of a big-city machine where power, contracts, campaign cash, and personal favors blur together. Federal corruption probes can collapse on technical grounds, but the public cost is real while they drag on. New York residents are left with higher trust losses, more scandal, and the same old message from political insiders: deny, deflect, and blame the investigators.[3][5][20]

The administration has tried to frame the case as unfair targeting, and officials said at the time of the raids that investigators had not told them the mayor or staff were targets.[3] That statement may help the political defense, but it does not erase the underlying facts already in public view: federal searches, seized phones, indictments, and repeated allegations of bribery inside Adams’s circle.[2][4][5] For voters who want clean government, this looks like a city still drowning in corruption and excuses.
