A Sunday Interview Turns Combative

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday to talk about vaccines and how his department would handle the next pandemic. The conversation grew heated fast. Kennedy accused host Dana Bash and her network of “punishing” Americans and practicing “press malpractice” during the COVID-19 crisis, turning a policy interview into a full-blown shouting match.

Bash pushed back repeatedly, pressing Kennedy on the ongoing measles outbreak and asking whether the Trump administration bears responsibility for past pandemic missteps. Kennedy grew visibly frustrated, at one point telling Bash she was “flustered” and spouting “nonsense” as she questioned his record on vaccine science and public messaging.

Kennedy Defends Trump, Blames Lockdowns

Kennedy insisted President Trump wanted to end the lockdowns early and should not shoulder blame for pandemic failures. He argued the shutdowns themselves, not any single official, caused the deepest harm to the country. “The thing that did the most damage to our country was the lockdowns,” Kennedy told Bash, pointing to Trump’s early opposition to extended closures.

Bash countered that Kennedy has spent months blaming nearly everyone but the administration he now serves for pandemic-era failures. The back-and-forth echoed earlier clashes between Kennedy and CNN moderators, including a 2024 debate exchange where Kennedy accused hosts Bash and Jake Tapper of acting as “cheerleaders” for lockdown policies he opposed.

Fauci’s Diary Adds Fuel to the Fire

The fight comes days after Kennedy accused former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci of “lying about everything” regarding COVID-19’s origin and government response. Kennedy made the claim after portions of Fauci’s private diary became public, saying the entries showed Fauci hid information from the American people.

Fauci has pushed back on Kennedy’s long-running criticism, recalling a meeting where Kennedy presented a slide claiming vaccines caused a long list of diseases, including autism, a link scientists have repeatedly found no evidence for. Fauci said he came away from the encounter unsure “what’s going on in his head” but certain it “wasn’t good”.

A Pattern of Clashes With the Press

This is not the first rough outing for Kennedy on CNN. Days earlier, Bash mused on air about Kennedy’s “eyebrow-raising” diary entries detailed in a new biography, prompting laughter from a CNN panel discussing his Capitol Hill testimony. Kennedy has faced similar friction during a week of seven congressional hearings covering vaccines and the measles outbreak.

Supporters and critics alike now watch each Kennedy appearance as a flashpoint in the country’s unresolved fight over pandemic accountability, media trust, and vaccine policy heading into the next public health test.
