(TheRedWire.com) – Hunter Biden was seen mingling with prominent politicians and public figures during an extravagant state dinner last Thursday, despite facing federal charges for willful failure to pay federal income tax. Attorney General Merrick Garland, who heads the Justice Department, was also present at the White House state dinner in honor of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In response to the charges, Hunter Biden’s legal team has stated that he intends to plead guilty to the tax offenses and has reached a pretrial diversion agreement for a separate felony charge related to possessing a firearm while being an unlawful user of controlled substances.
However, the plea agreement still requires approval from a judge. Just hours before the dinner, Republican members of the House released testimonies from two whistleblowers within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). These whistleblowers alleged that the Department of Justice, FBI, and IRS interfered with the investigation into Hunter Biden.
One of the whistleblowers, Gary Shapley Jr., an IRS Criminal Supervisory Special Agent, testified that Lesley Wolf, an Assistant United States Attorney in Delaware, informed him that “optics were a driving factor in the decision on whether to execute a search warrant” at President Biden’s residence in Delaware, in connection with the investigation involving Hunter Biden.
Attorney General Garland has faced intense scrutiny regarding the lenient penalties imposed on Hunter Biden and the absence of a prison sentence. Senator Rick Scott has demanded that Garland provide a comprehensive explanation to the American public about the plea deal between Hunter Biden and the U.S. attorney in Delaware, which would exempt him from serving any prison time.
Scott highlighted a recent case in Virginia, where a mother faces up to 24 months in prison for possessing a firearm while using controlled substances, and actor Wesley Snipes, who received three one-year sentences for tax-related charges. In contrast, Hunter Biden’s plea agreement with the Justice Department will allow him to evade imprisonment for the tax and firearms charges he faced.
Senator Scott voiced his concerns to Garland, accusing the Department of Justice of employing a two-tiered approach to criminal justice and questioning the message sent to the American public by the outcome of the five-year investigation and the leniency granted to Hunter Biden about both federal tax violations and firearms offenses.
