(TheRedWire.com) – On Monday, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) pushed for Chief Justice John Roberts to launch a probe into Justice Samuel Alito following his most recent remarks regarding ethics in the Supreme Court.

Whitehouse wrote a seven-page letter that included an ethics complaint over Alito’s comments in The Wall Street Journal’s opinion section, in which he had claimed that Congress did not have the authority to regulate the Supreme Court. White House is one of the most prominent critics of the Supreme Court’s ethics in the Senate.

In the letter, he has pushed for Roberts to investigate this case further and to take any necessary steps. He added that during a confirmation hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee had recently heard that it was wrong for an opinion to be expressed on any topic that might end up appearing in the Court. As he pointed out in this case, Alito’s opinion pertains to a matter that could end up in the Court.

The Democrats have been pushing for an ethics bill for the Supreme Court to be passed. Alito’s interview with the Journal in July covered a variety of topics. In regards to the most recent stories that had come out about him, he had argued that it was “nonsense” and claimed that he needed to defend himself as the Supreme Court bar was not doing it for him.

He proceeded to state that while this might be considered controversial, no Constitutional provision provided Congress with “the authority to regulate the Supreme Court.”
