(TheRedWire.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) slammed the House GOP and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) over their failed attempts to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

On Tuesday, the House Republicans’ attempts to oust Mayorkas from his role came to a dramatic end after three Republicans voted against the impeachment. Ocasio-Cortez suggested that the reason for the collapse in the impeachment efforts was that the Republicans were not able to elect a House Speaker that was their first choice, and as such, there was someone in office who had little experience.

On Wednesday during an interview on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes” Ocasio-Cortez argued that Republicans were not dealing with their first, second, or even third choice of speaker. She further pointed out that the Republican conference members had to deal with the only Speaker they were able “to get” and “agree on.”

Johnson was elected as the House Speaker last year after almost three weeks of the position being empty following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

The Republican conference only managed to agree on Johnson after going through four other Speaker nominations. Ocasio-Cortez, with her comments, suggested that Johnson did not have the necessary qualifications for the role. She further noted that Johnson was a “relative newcomer” when usually the Speaker is someone who has had extensive experience.

On Tuesday, Reps. Tom McClintock, Ken Buck (Colo.), and Mike Gallagher (Wis.) all opposed their party’s vote to impeach Mayorkas.  At the last minute, they were also joined by Republican Rep. Blake Moore (Utah) who also voted “no” to letting the legislation be brought back to the conference at a different date.
