(TheRedWire.com) – On Monday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) vowed to block any foreign aid for Ukraine and Israel unless it was accompanied by measures to handle the U.S. border crisis, including border policy measures such as the “remain in Mexico” policy being reintroduced.
During an appearance on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, Johnson criticized that funding aid for the two wars was included in the supplemental budget request of the Biden administration. However, he reiterated that his main focus would be on border policy.
As he pointed out, the cases of Ukraine and Israel were separate and different. He added that supporting Israel was a top priority for the government. However, he claimed that it was not possible for the government to be involved in securing the border of other countries, including Ukraine, when the U.S. border was not secure. He added that the border fight was the hill that they would be dying on.
Johnson also referenced the recent border visit he led with 64 Republican Congress members. He stated that according to Border Patrol agents and officials at the border, Biden reintroducing the “Remain in Mexico” policy with an executive order would be enough to reduce the influx of migrants by 70 percent as it would clearly show people that the United States was not open.
The policy called the Migrant Protection Protocols, was a controversial border rule that required refugees to stay in Mexico, which led to the formation of refugee camps along the southern border. Johnson has pointed out that the policy worked as a deterrent for those wanting to cross into the country.
