(TheRedWire.com) – GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis during a recent ABC News interview on Sunday in Iowa was asked about former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks that he could have stopped the Civil War from occurring through negotiations.

Florida Governor DeSantis argued that he did not know what Trump was talking about. He added that Lincoln had done at the time what was necessary and had abolished slavery while also saving the Union. DeSantis pointed out that this was a big “victory for the Republican Party” which was why it made no sense to Relitigate that.

On Saturday Trump argued that there had been many mistakes during the Civil War and claimed that negotiations would have helped them avoid the bloodshed. He added that the war was “so horrible” but also “fascinating.” He noted that it was very different and that he had been “attracted” to learning more about it and finding out all the mistakes that had been made. He proceeded to argue that if he was being honest he believed that he would be able to negotiate the issues and stop the Civil War from occurring.

Trump did not provide any insight into which details he believed to be negotiable to avoid the approximately 620,000 soldier deaths that had occurred from 1861 to 1865. He did however point out that without the war Abraham Lincoln would not be remembered in the way he is remembered today and that he would just be remembered as a U.S. President.
