(TheRedWire.com) – For the first time this year, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) took a position in the Republican primary race and announced his formal endorsement of former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primary.

During an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning,” which is set to air on Sunday, McCarthy stated that he believes Trump is going to be the 2024 Republican nominee and that he would back him in this case. He added that he was going to support Trump and that he would be supporting the president.

McCarthy also pointed out that he is expecting the Democratic nominee to be President Biden and that Trump is going to win reelection. He added that the Republicans are going to increase their House seats next year and that they are going to win control of the upper chamber.

CBS News campaign correspondent and chief election Robert Costa asked McCarthy during an interview whether he would consider serving in Trump’s Cabinet. McCarthy stated in response that he would if it was the right position, and he believed himself to be the best for the job. He added he had previously often collaborated with Trump and that together, they were able to win the majority.

On Wednesday, McCarthy announced that by the end of the year, he would be leaving his seat in the House while looking to serve the United States differently. In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, McCarthy argued that he was planning on continuing to recruit the best people to run for office.
