(TheRedWire.com) – On Tuesday, the Protect Illinois Communities act was signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.). This new law is one of the biggest moves that the state has made in order to curb gun violence.
Pritzker in his statement after signing the law said that they would continue to fight to protect the community against the forces of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
This new law completely bans the sale and distribution of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches that could be used to turn handguns into assault weapons. Those who already own semi-automatic weapons will also be forced to register that they own a gun. This will help reduce the chances of the guns being misused by someone who should not have access to them.
As Pritzker said he hopes that through this fight future generations will only read and hear about shootings in textbooks but will not have to face any massacres like the ones that took place in Highland Park, Sandy Hook, and Uvalde. He further noted that he no longer wanted to live in a world in which each shooting needed a title so that you could know which one the other person is referring to.
However, despite the law having been passed, the NRA is saying that they will fight against the law. Despite this many have praised the move made in Illinois as it will help remove firearms from the streets.
Last Summer, a deadly mass shooting in Highland Park, Ill., left seven dead and dozens of people injured. The shooting happened during a Fourth of July parade.
