(TheRedWire.com) – On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and other officials had to go on the defensive as Senate Republicans started intensifying their push to have the Secretary impeached.
In Mayorkas’ latest appearance before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, the situation escalated beyond the usually heated exchanges when Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) vowed to soon introduce a vote of no-confidence resolution for the Secretary.
GOP lawmakers have been calling for Mayorkas’ impeachment for some time, claiming that he has failed to stop the influx of immigrants entering the country through the southern border. So far, an official inquiry has not yet been launched, and discussions about Mayorkas have been put on the back burner as the focus is currently on resuming debt ceiling negotiations.
On Tuesday, Marshall suggested that he was “ready to receive articles of impeachment from the House and conduct an impeachment trial in this body.” He added that at the same time, the Senate needed to show the House that they did not believe the Secretary had been able to complete his duties.
When Mayorkas tried to respond to Marshall’s comments, he was quickly shut down, with Marshall claiming he wanted answers and not “lectures.”
Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) provided Mayorkas with the space to respond; however, the Secretary declined at that time. Carper also called for the other Senators to “treat the Secretary with the respect he deserves” given his complex tasks and duties.
