(TheRedWire.com) – On Friday, David Axelrod, a former adviser of Barack Obama, warned that the court’s decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the state’s Republican party would divide the country.

Last week, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump should be blocked from appearing on the state’s primary ballot. On Thursday, Maine’s secretary of state made a similar decision, arguing that under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, Trump was not eligible to participate in the presidential election because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

In an interview on CNN, Axelrod noted strong reservations about the decision. He further argued that this could tear apart the country if Trump were indeed blocked from running as millions of people intended to vote for him. He added that victory must occur at the poll if Trump is to be beaten.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) noted in her decision that Trump had pushed forward a false narrative of election fraud and that his rhetoric had inflamed his supporters. She further argued that Trump had been aware of how his statements could encourage and incite violence but that he had not taken any action to stop that from occurring.

In Colorado, the state’s Supreme Court reached a similar conclusion. That case is expected to be heard by the Supreme Court.

Axelrod pointed out that the recent decision in Maine was going to be playing into Trump’s claims that these were politically motivated decisions made against him.
