(TheRedWire.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., expressed worry about the possibility that the recent victory in the New York special election of Democrat Tom Suozzi against Republican Mazi Pilip could potentially lead to the Democrats moving to the right on certain issues, including the border crisis and immigration.

During the debate, Suozzi and Pilip discussed a number of top issues for voters, including abortions, crime, and security. Throughout his campaign, Suozzi retained that he believed in finding long-term solutions. As he noted, the United States Senate had brought in a solution that was going to build a wall at the border and give the states and cities in the country the resources to deal with the immigration crisis.

Politico in their report pointed out that in his campaign ads, Suozzi had vowed to help with border security.

Ocasio-Cortez argued that they needed to be careful but pointed out that it would never be possible to “out-Republican a Republican.” She added that she did not believe that the direction Suozzi had taken regarding migration would work with the rest of the nation.

This is a point that several Democrats have also made as Suozzi’s line is away from the party’s progressive wings on the issues of immigration and the border. This is why they do not believe that he should be used as an example for any future elections.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., argued that his position should not be the mandate and that those representing border areas needed to be heard as much as the congressmen from New York were heard.
