(TheRedWire.com) – On Thursday, House Oversight Committee chair Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) stated during an interview on Fox News with Jason Chaffetz that he found the decision to block former President Donald Trump from appearing on the Maine primary ballot in 2024 unsurprising.

As he argued, he believed that the ruling made by the secretary of state in Maine had been political and that he expected such “stunts” from Democratic states. He added that what he feared was that other states would follow this bandwagon and that they would see more such decisions.

During the interview, Comer also noted that during the Christmas holiday, he had the opportunity to talk with voters in his home state who believed it was “absurd” that Democrats were attempting to prevent the former President from being on the ballot again. This, he said, was viewed as clear election interference. The claims regarding election interference have often been made by the GOP ahead of the election.

Comer also said that he believed that the decision to stop Trump from appearing on the primary ballot was an attempt by the secretary of state to distract from the fact that the Democrat’s most likely candidate was very unpopular. As he said, the Democrats were taking every possible opportunity to halt the GOP’s momentum ahead of the presidential election, which is why he believed that there would be more blue states that would pull such stunts.

The remarks came after Secretary of State Shenna Bellows decided that under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, Trump was ineligible to appear on Maine’s primary ballot.
