(TheRedWire.com) – On Sunday, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) warned that former President Donald Trump was going to attempt to “overturn” the 2024 presidential election if he wins the race.
During an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Raskin avoided a question on whether the decision to remove Trump from the Maine primary ballot would turn the former President into a “martyr.” Colorado was the first state to have removed Trump from the presidential ballot last week, claiming that Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack disqualifies him from holding office again under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.
Regarding whether Trump would be turned into a martyr, Raskin argued that that may or may not happen but that the important thing was to focus on what the Constitution said. He added that Trump could turn himself into a “martyr in any given context” but that if he was allowed to remain on the ballot, despite his previous attempts to overturn the 2020 election and cause an insurrection, then he would undoubtedly do the same in 2024 if he loses to President Joe Biden.
He added that this was why they needed to enforce the U.S. Constitution. He said that Trump had disqualified himself from the race through his actions. Trump’s campaign previously stated that the former President would appeal the decision in Maine and Colorado. This could mean that, ultimately, the Supreme Court will get to decide whether or not Trump is eligible to be on the presidential ballot.
