(TheRedWire.com) – Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., has called for Vice President Kamala Harris to “fulfill” her duty under the constitution and preside in the impeachment trial in the Senate of Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary.

Last week, the House voted that Mayorkas should be impeached in a 214-213 vote. The next part of the impeachment process includes a trial in the Senate where the chamber, which has a Democratic majority, is expected to swiftly dismiss the impeachment articles and completely exonerate Mayorkas.

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., released a statement noting that it would be Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray, D-Wash., who would preside in the trial rather than Harris.

On Tuesday, Scott sent a letter to Harris arguing that she needed to perform her duties. As he pointed out under the Constitution she is the presiding officer in the Senate. He added that while Schumer has revealed that he intended to have Murray preside in this case, he would encourage her to actually preside over the impeachment trial as is her constitutional duty.

Scott also pointed out that three years ago at the start of the Biden administration, he had appointed Harris as the “border czar.” He added that in accepting the appointment she had acknowledged that it was necessary to find the cause of the immigration flows across the southern border. He added that as such she should be present to determine whether or not a high-ranking member of the Biden administration was part of the “root causes”  that were causing the influx in immigration.

Mayorkas has been impeached by the House GOP on two articles, one of which relates to his alleged willful systematic refusal to enforce immigration law.
